“The British Royal Marines will take over some of the traditional roles of state special forces units – the Special Air Service (SAS) and Special Boat Service (SBS) – as they prepare for some new ‘high risk’ counter-state duties,” Totten was quoted as saying. from Russia Today, Sunday (18/7/2021).
The SAS is a special forces regiment that is part of the British Army. While SBS is a special forces belonging to the British Navy.
Totten himself leads a future 4,000-strong commando force that will share the burden of special forces such as in maritime counterterrorist missions or some partnership operations some of which carry higher risk.

“The SAS and SBS appear to be doing everything they can to fight the country’s great enemies – Moscow and Beijing,” the British military official told the newspaper.
“What we can do is allow (special forces) to focus on more difficult, more complex, counter-Russian, counter-China (tasks). It takes real specialist expertise, so we’ll give them more time and people to handle it and we can do some of the work,” said Totten.
Totten did not go into detail about the nature of such future operations. The Times reported, citing several military sources, that the mission may involve some politically dangerous tasks such as training the navies of countries in the South China Sea region to make them better equipped to repel what British newspapers called “China hostility.”
The nature of the potential UK Special Forces operations against Russia remains unclear, but the Times claims they could involve Russian intelligence surveillance and military units cooperating with British MI6 intelligence.
