An outbreak of bird flu has been diagnosed at a hobby holder in Moerzeke. It concerns the highly contagious variant of the H5N8 type. To prevent the virus from spreading further, a 10 km surveillance zone, a 3 km protection zone and a 500 m temporary buffer zone have been set up around the fireplace. Additional measures for professional and private poultry farmers will be introduced in these zones. No new measures are being taken in the rest of the country. In the surveillance zone and protection zone, all professional keepers will have to draw up an inventory within 24 hours, indicating how many animals are kept per species. Within the temporary buffer zone of 500m around the fireplace, hobby holders must also submit an inventory to the mayor within 48 hours, indicating how many animals are kept per species. There is also a ban on moving all poultry, other birds and hatching eggs in this zone. This contamination shows that the bird flu virus has not yet completely disappeared in Belgium and that all poultry farmers still have to be careful. The FASFC is monitoring the situation closely. The virus that is currently circulating, and in recent years, is not transmissible to humans. The consumer does not run any risk. The meat and eggs of poultry can be consumed in complete safety.
