– The caravan was completely crushed after it overturned and took the car with it, says operations manager in the Inland police district, Sidsel Svarstad.
It was at 11.30 that the Innlandet police district received a report of a caravan that had blown off the road at Valdresflya, near Bitihorn.
Emergency services rushed to the scene. The two people who were in the car were not injured, Svarstad assures. Bilberger was then on his way to the place.
– There is a lot of traffic on site. But the car came in a lane that made them blow off the road, and not into the oncoming lane, so that no one else was injured, says Svarstad.
Just before 17.00 on Saturday, the police report that the road has been cleared.
Warns of light to stiff gales
– This is due to strong winds. It is probably up to a light gale on Valdresflya today, says Svarstad.
On Twitter, the police wrote, about an hour after the accident, that they encourage everyone not to drive over mountain passes with a caravan during the day.
The meteorologist on duty, Terje Alsvik Walløe, confirms that the wind is fresh.
– The average wind is a small to stiff gale on the exposed parts of Valdresflya. There may have been gusts of wind that have been up for 15 or 20 seconds, but these are only assumptions on my part.
Got the wind in from the side
In this case, the wind has come from an unfavorable side, the meteorologist explains.
– When the wind comes from the southwest across the road, as it did in this case, the wind gets a good grip. When it comes in like this from the side, it is enough to overturn a caravan.
When the gusts become strong, caravans are extra exposed because they have large surfaces.
– You should definitely know what to do, if you are going to drive with something behind the car in such conditions.
