Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
audio-only social app, Clubhouse, just brought features direct message to send text messages to fellow users, called Backchannel.
The backchannel offers messaging between users, both single-user and group chats.
The Backchannel feature was actually leaked to the public last June. At that time the feature had been tested on some selected Clubhouse users on iOS.
This feature is designed to help moderators chat in chat rooms between users during audio chat rooms.
Besides being able to send messages, through the Backchannel feature, you can also share links. However, the feature does not yet support sending document, photo and video files.
Although only link submissions are available, a spokesperson said new feature development will be rolling out in the near future.
So far the Clubhouse private messaging feature has focused on chatting with people you know or people you want to know.
The messaging system also has the option of sending a message request, so the user can choose to agree to receive messages from unknown people or not.
The messaging system works across the Clubhouse iOS and Android apps. To get started look for the little paper airplane icon on the profile page, or swipe right from the main menu.
Quotes Tech Crunch, messages that have already been sent on the Backchannel cannot be deleted. So you can be sure again the message you typed, before the message was sent to other users.
The feature is considered an important development for the application, which has now been downloaded more than 8 million times on Android devices with more than 500 thousand rooms created every day, as quoted The Verge.
The app’s main competitors are Twitter Spaces and Facebook Live Audio Rooms. The feature on both platforms allows users to text chat while participating in audio conversations.
So the Backchannel feature makes Clubhouse more on par with rival apps, in order to attract more social media users to the app.
