“La Civil” tells the story of Cielo, a Mexican mother who goes in search of her daughter who was kidnapped by a drug cartel. When the authorities fail to help, Cielo takes matters into her own hands and gradually transforms from a housewife into a vengeful militant. The lead role is played by Arcelia Ramirez, with supporting roles for Alvaro Guerrero and Jorge A. Jimenez.
The film, inspired by true facts of cartel violence in Mexico, is a production by Hans Everaert for the Antwerp production house Menuetto, in co-production with the production house of the Dardenne brothers, Les Films du Fleuve, the Romanian Mobra Films of Golden Palm winner Cristian Mungiu and the Mexican Theorema.
The filmmaker thanked her producers for “the audacity to believe in her project”. And she dedicated the film “to all the families in Mexico and elsewhere who are still looking for their loved ones.”
The Grand Prize Un Certain Regard was for Kira Kovalenko’s film “Unclenching the fists”, shot in North Ossetia.
