Scientists have captured the tsunami that wiped out the dinosaurs for the first time

66 million years ago, a giant asteroid crashed into the waters near Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. As a result of the collision, the atmosphere was covered with a cloud that covered the Sun for years. This caused temperatures on Earth to drop and the dinosaurs became extinct. This collision caused a tsunami reaching a height of 1.5 kilometers in the region. For the first time, scientists have managed to image the fossilized megawaves of this tsunami.

FIRST TIME OCCUPIED

The asteroid that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago created a 1.5 kilometer high tsunami in North America. Scientists have unearthed the fossilized remains of megawaves for the first time.

IT TAKES TENS OF YEARS

These waves, embedded in sediments observable in the state of Louisiana, were discovered by the University of Louisiana using seismic imaging.

Scientists have spent decades searching for evidence of this extinction-level event, including finding traces of the consequences of the asteroid’s impact on what is now Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

However, after the event, massive forest fires broke out and clouds of dust covered the atmosphere, as well as a huge tsunami that sent tidal waves thousands of kilometers from the impact site.

Within the scope of the study published in the scientific journal Earth & Planetary Science Letters, using seismic imaging, scientists examined the soil layer 1.5 kilometers below the surface where the impact occurred. Next, they found fossilized waves that were one kilometer apart and 15 meters high.

FOUND 1.5 KILOMETER UNDER THE SURFACE

These waves crashed into waters 60 meters deep as they approached the shore, the researchers said. However, the direction of the waves located 1.5 kilometers below the center of Louisiana was noted to be consistent with previous studies.

The author of the study, Gary Kinsland, said in a statement on the subject, “The Earth was shaken by earthquakes of magnitude 11 66 million years ago due to the impact of a large asteroid. “The waters were so deep that a tsunami 1.5 kilometers high occurred and took everything in its path.”

MILLIONS LIVES HAVE DIE

The researchers stated that after the collision, marine life moved to land and land life to the sea, and millions of creatures died in this process.
