The basketball player, Luis Scola, was the national standard bearer at the opening ceremony, in which it was the second Olympiad with more Argentine participants in history, just behind London 1948.

Judoka Paula Pareto won the gold medal in the category under 48 kilograms on August 6, 2016. Pareto beat the Korean Jeong Bo-Kyeong. Pareto had already won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This gold medal is the first obtained by an Argentine woman in the history of the Olympic Games, in addition to the first obtained by Argentine judo.
Tennis player Juan Martín del Potro won the silver medal after falling in the final against Serbian Novak Djokovic in 2 sets, both by way of the tie break. Del Potro had already achieved a bronze 4 years ago in London.
In Vela, Santiago Lange and Cecilia Carranza obtained the gold medal aboard a Nacra 17, in a way that, Along with tennis and badminton, it is mixed in terms of the sex of the sports couple. The Argentine duo took the gold and obtained a total score of 77.
Los Leones, as the National Field Hockey team in Argentina is known, won a gold medal after beating the Belgian team 4-2. This gold was the first medal in the history of Argentine men’s field hockey, a milestone that brushed past the women’s team by winning silver at London 2012.
