The death toll continues to fall as a result unrest which struck south Africa (South Africa). South Africa’s government says the unrest has claimed 212 lives, a sharp increase from the 117 deaths announced the previous day.
As reported by the news agency AFP, Saturday (17/7/2021), Government Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said at a press conference on Friday (16/7) local time, most of the new deaths occurred in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province, which is the epicenter of the violence.
However, he said the situation was “gradually and definitely returning to normal.”
Ntshavheni reported that an additional 1,488 incidents were reported in KZN overnight, but he did not provide details.
The province also reported an additional 89 deaths over the past 24 hours.
More than 2,550 people have been arrested, Ntshavheni said.
No new incidents were reported in Gauteng province which includes the financial capital Johannesburg, where 56 cases of violence or looting has been recorded since the start of the riots a week ago.
Earlier, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that unrest has been “planned” and the government will hunt down those responsible. Ramaphosa said that the deadly unrest currently sweeping South Africa was unprecedented.
