Will this be the longest cabinet formation ever?
The elections were on March 17, four months ago tomorrow. The formation started the next day with the appointment of scouts Jorritsma (VVD) and Ollongren (D66). That was 121 days ago today. Add a holiday of three weeks to that and we have about 145 days. The real formation has yet to begin.
The record for the longest cabinet formation is held by the previous cabinet, Rutte III. That was on the platform after 225 days, and thus knocked the formation of the Van Agt cabinet off the throne in 1977 (208 days). During the previous formation, the negotiators were already further than now after four months. Exactly 100 days after the election VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie knew that they wanted to work together. It it took a very long time before a government agreement was reached.
