It will receive the waste during the closure of the Villejean energy recovery unit (UVE). AT Bourgbarré, South of Rennes, a temporary transfer center will be built. The works were launched Thursday, July 15, 2021, for an opening scheduled for spring 2022.
The objective of the Bourgbarré center during the 18 months of closure of the Rennes unit: collect part of the incinerable and bulky waste from the Rennes metropolitan area to transfer them to other UVEs or other treatment facilities, mainly in Brittany, Normandy and Pays de Loire.
A plaster recovery unit
But eventually, by the end of 2023, this center, operated by Veolia, will mainly be used to recover another waste: plaster. This activity, with a capacity of 15,000 tonnes per year, will make it possible to create 100% recycled gypsum, in order to avoid using natural resources. It will then be reused for the manufacture of cement, staff or plasterboard. The Bourgbarré site will be the only one in France to dedicate 100% of its activity to this recovery.
Three years of research, carried out by the Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering laboratory of the University of Rennes 1, were necessary to set up this project.
“Rennes Métropole has an ambitious ecological transition strategy. The development of the circular economy and reuse, to which we want to give real impetus during this mandate, will be a strong axis ”, welcomes Nathalie Appéré, president of Rennes Métropole.
