“Covid-19 reinfection occurs when someone who has recovered from a corona virus infection is infected again by a different structure of the corona virus from the previous viral infection,” said Primaya Evasari Hospital Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Yoga Fitria Kusuma, SpPD, in an official statement, Friday. (16/7).
Yoga explains that reinfection is different from repositive. Where is reinfection, the body is attacked again corona virus different structure with the previous virus after recovering, but repositive, the body is attacked by the same virus after recovering.
“To distinguish this, there must be sampling to sequence the viral genome. The samples came from tests in the first and second cases. Researchers then sequenced the two samples and compared them. If they are different, it means the patient has been reinfected with Covid-19,” explained Yoga.
Meanwhile, the group of Covid-19 patients who are at risk of reinfection, Yoga refers to research at Public Health England Colindale in the UK and the Statens Serum Institute in Denmark to answer this question.

“People who have been infected with Covid-19 get up to 80% protection from a second infection or reinfection. According to a study in Denmark, protection for elderly citizens (over 65 years) is only 47 percent,” said Yoga.
“Thus, referring to the results of the study, the elderly are in a group that is more at risk of experiencing COVID-19 reinfection,” he continued.
The analysis of the research also shows that among people who tested positive in the first wave of Covid-19, 0.65% were positive again in the second wave. “People who have comorbidities are also more likely to get reinfection with Covid-19,” said Yoga.
“But basically, reinfection of Covid-19 is still rare,” he continued.
For that, Yoga advises to keep running health protocol During pandemic Covid-19 still ongoing even for those who have been exposed to Covid-19 or commonly known as Covid-19 survivors or graduates.

“Therefore, people who have been infected with Covid-19 must still apply health protocols. It’s the same as people who have received vaccines. Although vaccines provide protection against virus attacks, people who have been vaccinated can still be infected if exposed to the corona virus that causes Covid-19 , suggested Yoga.
