In Estonia, the risk of spreading coronavirus increases from below to medium

If there is a moderate risk of coronavirus transmission, it is recommended to wear masks indoors, to avoid rooms with a large number of people and, if possible, to meet other people in the fresh air.

On 8 June, the risk of coronavirus spread in Estonia was reduced from high to medium. On June 22, the risk level was reduced to a low.

In April, Estonia introduced a system according to which there are four levels of risk of spreading coronavirus – low, medium, high and very high. The level of risk takes into account the daily average number of infections and deaths, the proportion of positive tests, the number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals, the proportion of cases where the source of infection cannot be traced, and other factors.

Illars Lanno, director of the Estonian Department of Health, has already reported on Wednesday that the increase in coronavirus infections in Estonia was caused by the spread of the delta variant of the virus, and the third wave of the Covid-19 epidemic has started in the country.

“The delta strain is very visible. In early June, there was a time when the delta strain was found in eight to ten percent of all samples. Today we have reached 80 percent and more,” Lanno told a news conference.

He pointed out that there are regions in Estonia where the infection rate has risen very rapidly.

“If we look at the forecasts until August, we see that there will be 150 infections a day in mid-August. It’s all in our own hands. For the most part, we are seeing an increase in infections in southern Estonia,” said the head of the health department.

“The Department of Health has the most important and fundamental role in the delta strain [izplatības] restriction. Nobody wants a situation like the one we had last August, [kad strauji pieauga inficēšanās gadījumu skaits]. But one thing is clear – the third wave has now begun, “Lanno stressed.

He added that there has been a recent increase in the number of infections among young people.

The only way to effectively control the spread of the virus is through vaccination, said the director of the Estonian Department of Health,

The delta strain is the most infectious strain of the new coronavirus since the beginning of the global pandemic. It was first detected in India several months ago, but has spread rapidly and is contributing to a faster increase in Covid-19 cases, even in countries where vaccination is very active. Due to the prevalence of this type, many countries have renewed restrictions that they had only recently lifted.

The 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population, estimated by the Estonian Department of Health, is currently 45. Two weeks ago, it was 29.5.
