Hamburg (dpa) – The ATP tennis tournament at Rothenbaum in Hamburg is entering the decisive phase without German participation. Philipp Kohlschreiber and Dominik Koepfer were the last DTB players to drop out in the round of 16.
Kohlschreiber from Augsburg lost 5: 7, 6: 4, 3: 6 after 2:25 hours against the six seeded Serb Filip Krajinovic at the Hamburg European Open. Later Koepfer from Furtwangen lost to tournament favorites and French Open finalist Stefanos Tsisipas 6: 7 (2: 7), 3: 6.
Tokyo starter Koepfer (27) demanded everything from the fourth in the world rankings from Greece, who was placed in first place in Hamburg. The left-hander acted self-confidently and forced the favorite into the tie-break after four set balls were blocked, which Tsitsipas then clearly won. The 37-year-old resisted violently at 30 degrees in summer. The eight years younger opponent still managed to break to 5: 7 and win the set. The second set was secured by the German who took Krajinovic’s serve to make it 5: 4 and then kept his service. In the decisive round, Kohlschreiber conceded breaks to 0: 2 and 1: 5 – in the end the Serbian won the day.
