Biologists hope that their findings will benefit farmers so that they can choose rams that will live longer and more productively.
Scientists from the University of Otago have found that castrated rams live much longer than males with reproductive organs. According to experts, the surgical procedure significantly slows down the aging of animal DNA. The corresponding conclusions were published EurekAlert.
The article says the researchers measured the biological age of the rams’ DNA using an epigenetic clock. It turned out that they ticked more slowly in castrated males than in their peers.
“This study was unique in the sense that it identified the relationship between male hormones and the aging process,” – said the scientists.
Such conclusions could theoretically apply to humans, however, added experts, they do not suggest castration as a way to prolong men’s life. This experiment, in their opinion, can help farmers.
Recall molecular biologists and bioengineers from the University of California San Diego, USA, discovered the key mechanisms of aging.
