Italian villages will give you 28,000 euros if you live there…

It seems too good to be true, but it is real: many villages in the Italian region of Calabria offer people 28,000 euros to live there and start their own business. In this way, the authorities hope to prevent the exodus.

Don’t expect to end up in bustling world cities if you accept the offer, which is worth 28,000 euros for a maximum of three years. The Italian villages are all sleeping villages where no more than 2,000 people live and where more inhabitants have left in recent years than have moved in. In other words, there is nothing to experience. A beautiful view of the mountains or the sea is included.

With the money offered, the new residents are expected to start their own business in the village. They choose whether to come up with something new or to accept proposals from business people who are already active there. It can be anything: a restaurant, a farm, a cafe, a shop or so on.

Not everyone qualifies: You must be under 40 years old and must be willing to move within 90 days of your application. In other words, there is momentum. The hope is that the villages will become more attractive with the arrival of young people and millennials who want to roll up their sleeves.

The ultimate goal is to make Calabria a more attractive place to live. Mayor Gianpietro Coppola of Altomonte says CNN that he wanted to do something other than offer the houses for one euro, which you have heard more and more in recent years. “This should be an experiment of inclusion. Attracting people to live and enjoy the region and give new life to unused locations in the city.”

It is expected that you will be able to subscribe to the offer one of the coming weeks. More information will follow later. These are the villages of Aieta, Albidona, Civita, Samo e Precacore, Bova, Caccuri, Sant’Agata del Bianco, Santa Severina and San Donato di Ninea.
