“Nabil has clearly said that he wants us to continue”, lawyer Peter Schouten said in an interview with RTL Nieuws. “Onno and I had already decided that, and we also knew from our client that he was combative.”
Peter Schouten and Onno de Jong represent key witness B. in the Marengo trial. They say they have not hesitated for a moment to continue.
Decision by B.
Although the final decision lay with B. himself. He has now experienced an attack on a person in his immediate vicinity three times. In front of his confidant De Vries, B.’s brother and lawyer were also shot. His brother Reduan B. and lawyer Derk Wiersum did not survive the attack.

Schouten and De Jong have discussed the scenario of an attack before, including De Vries. “Then we said if this happens to one of us, the other wants us to continue. We do not want to give way. That has always been the position of Peter R. de Vries throughout his life,” says Schouten.
“I no longer have to wonder because we are in this situation and there is no way back,” says De Jong. “This is what we have to deal with and we will do that. Besides, if I were to stop tomorrow, the security wouldn’t be completely gone either. So that doesn’t change the situation.”
‘Onno and I need you’
To support their colleague De Vries, the two lawyers brought flowers and a card to the garage where Peter R. was shot last week.
“Nothing can get you down, so you’re going to win. Even now!”, De Jong wrote. “I love you very much. Fight on. Everyone wants you to continue with your good work against injustice. And Onno and I need you in our team,” Schouten wrote on his card. View the images here:
