An exhibition of Baltic contemporary ceramics will be on display at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design

Within the framework of the 3rd Latvian Ceramics Biennale program, from August 3 to October 8, 2021, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (Riga, Skārņu Street 10) will host the exhibition of Baltic contemporary ceramics “CREO ERGO SUM”, the museum representative informed the portal “Delfi”.

In order to acquaint the public with the most prominent artists of contemporary ceramics in the Baltic States, the current state and development of the industry in the changing concepts of the globalization era, Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, The Latvian Center for Contemporary Ceramics and the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center are organizing an exhibition entitled “CREO ERGO SUM” or “I CREATE, SO I AM”.

In the 21st century, the world is witnessing a growing popularity of ceramic media in the field of contemporary art. Describing the current ceramic renaissance, visual arts researchers call it the “new video” and the “taste of the decade.” In the Baltic States, this type of creative expression has always been historically significant, but in the last decade it has acquired a new, broader sound. Significant ceramic events are held in Latvia every year, and the creative works of individual authors are often included in various visual art projects. In 2019, Kris Lemsalu’s large-scale ceramic installation was shown at the Estonian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Next – in 2022 – Latvia will be represented at this famous international forum by the porcelain art duo Skuja Braden (Latvia / USA).

At the exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, 19 ceramicists selected from curators from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia will demonstrate their works. They are united by both the ceramic material as a means of expression and the talent to create, confirming the essence and mission of the artist. The exhibition of Baltic contemporary ceramics invites you to look at the act of creation as the basis of your existence.

The exhibition will feature works by Latvian artists Kaspars Geiduks, Valdas Podkalne, Daina Pundurs, Juta Rindina, Ilona Romule and Elīna Titanė, while Lithuania will be represented by Izroildžon Baroti, Eglė Einikytė-Narkevičienė, Monika Gedrimaitė, Milena Pirštelienė, Agidijus Radvė. Estonian artists will be represented by Ingrid Allik, Kadi Hektor, Lauri Kilusk, Laura Põld, Leo Rohlin and Anne Türn.
