A hotel collapsed on Monday afternoon in China in the large tourist city of Suzhou, in the east of the country, leaving at least one dead and 10 missing, according to official media. “Relief operations continue and an investigation is underway to determine the causes of the tragedy” which took place at 3.33 pm local time (0733 GMT), state television CCTV reported. Seven people were brought out alive from the rubble of the Siji Kaiyuan Hotel, but three are in serious condition, according to the same source.

The property had opened in 2018 and consisted of 54 rooms, as well as a banquet hall, according to its description on Chinese tourist reservations site Ctrip. Images broadcast by CCTV show dozens of rescuers in orange coveralls, wearing helmets and busy beside a mountain of rubble. Building collapses are a regular occurrence in China. Most of the investigations bring to light non-compliance with construction standards.
