Nigel de Jong has been away from for over fifteen years Ajax, but will forever carry his childhood love in his heart. Over the years, he has even come close to making a comeback in Amsterdam a few times.
That is what the 81-time Orange international says in the Ajax Podcast. “I came very close a few times,” said De Jong. “In the end it didn’t go through and that was for various reasons, but my agent and I did have a few conversations with the board of Ajax.”
De Jong left for Hamburger SV in early 2006 and later played for Manchester City, AC Milan, LA Galaxy, Galatasaray, FSV Mainz 05 and now plays in Qatar. It looks like he will come full circle someday. “Probably no longer as a player, because I will soon be 37 (on November 30, ed.) Although you never know, of course. If you’re listening: I’m still available, Erik”, he winks at Ajax coach Erik ten Hag. “But when I return, I want to be part of the organization. I have Amsterdam blood, that will never leave my heart.”
