Monday’s number is slightly lower than Sunday’s, when it was 9,369 according to corrected figures. On Saturday, the government agency recorded 10,281 new cases, the highest number since Christmas on December 25 last year. The RIVM registered only one corona-related death in the past 24 hours.
Corona patients in hospitals
There are currently 213 corona patients in Dutch hospitals. This is the highest number since July 5, reports the National Coordination Center for Patients Spreading (LCPS). Since Sunday, 7 new corona patients have been added to the intensive care units and the nursing wards. Most corona patients have been in those nursing wards since July 2. It is mainly people over 60 who are currently in hospital, while many young people test positive but only have mild complaints from corona.
There are currently 84 corona patients in the intensive care units, which is 4 fewer than on Sunday. The number of corona patients in the nursing wards has increased by 11 last 24 hours, from 118 to 129. On Friday there were a total of 206 corona patients in hospitals, on Saturday there were 205.
With 1407 new cases in the past 24 hours, the Amsterdam-Amstelland region is by far the largest corona fire at the moment. Most of those infections were detected in the capital itself: 1154. There were even more on Sunday: 1331. Such high numbers have not occurred since the start of the corona crisis.
Rotterdam follows with 443 positive tests, in Groningen there were 436. In Utrecht, 411 people were told that they had contracted the virus, in Breda 289.
The National Coordination Center for Patients Spreading (LCPS) expects greater occupancy in the intensive care units and nursing wards from this week. According to the LCPS, there has been a trend break since Friday.
Due to the explosive increase in the number of infections, the seven-day average has risen to 6619. A week ago, this average was still below a thousand. So it has increased more than sixfold in a very short period of time. The increase followed relaxation in nightlife, among other things. These coincided with the advance of the delta variant of the virus, which, according to RIVM, is 40 to 60 percent more contagious than the alpha variant (previously known as the British variant) and now causes the most corona cases.
