Slovak cycling Peter Sagan had to resign from the Tour de France last Thursday due to worsening knee injury, which he suffered after falling at the end of the 3rd stage after a collision with Caleb Ewan.
Although the three-time world champion continued the prestigious race, he survived the difficult stages in the mountains with pain, but then came the moment that definitely stopped him.“It’s not nice that I have to finish. After my fall, it looked like it was gradually improving, but two days later I hit the same knee with a sprint on the handlebars and it swelled. I can’t bend my leg, “said Peter Sagan before the 12th stage.
On Monday, the Slovak cyclist shared his health condition with the fans and added a photo of the knee after the operation.
“Hi everybody! I would like to inform you about my condition after leaving the Tour de France. First of all, I would like to thank the management of BORA-hansgrohe, the team’s physicians and especially our lead doctor Christopher Edler for their support and treatment since my fall in stage 3.
Second, I am grateful for all the support messages I have received from my colleagues, friends, and fans around the world. I really appreciate it. The fall in stage 3 caused me a deep wound, which I cleaned to prevent infection. After a few days, however, inflammation developed and, unfortunately, the antibiotics did not work. The only option was to end up on the Tour and go for the scalpel. Fortunately, it was just a superficial infection.
I would also like to thank the doctors and medical staff at the IM2S Clinic in Monaco for performing an excellent operation in such a short time and for the excellent cooperation with the team’s medical staff. At the moment I feel good and in a few days I will be able to train again. If all goes well, I will drive very soon. Well thank you!”
