The highest-placed defending champion defeated the tournament seven of the Italian Mattea Berrettini 6: 7 (4), 6: 4, 6: 4, 6: 3 in the final.
The Serb won the 20th Grand Slam trophy and matched the record of Swiss Roger Federer and Spanish Rafael Nadal. In the event of a triumph at the September US Open, Novak Djokovic would become independent at the head of the historical tables and complete the calendar Grand Slam. Australian Rod Laver last won all Big Four events in one season in 1969. Novak Djokovic is the second player in the Open era to win the Australian Open at the same year, Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Thanks to Sunday’s triumph, he will collect a premium of £ 1.7 million. The trustee of the Slovak coach Marián Vajda and the Croatian Goran Ivaniševič will add 2,000 points to the ATP Entry ranking. In its Monday issue, he will consolidate his post as a world unit.
For Matteo Berrettini, advancing to the grand slam final was already a life success. So far, no Italian has played on the All England Club grass for the title. The last tennis player from the Apennine Peninsula to raise a single trophy over his head in grand slam was Adriano Panatta in 1976 at Roland Garros.
Novak Djokovic admitted that Matteo Berrettini was a challenging opponent in the final. “It simply came to our notice then. I know it’s not the best feeling to lose in the finals, but Matteo has a great future ahead of him. It’s an Italian hammer, I’ve felt it on my own skin at Roland Garros.
Winning Wimbledon has always been my biggest dream. As a seven-year-old I built a trophy at home and now I’m celebrating my sixth title here, it’s fantastic. In the number of grand slam trophies, I compared Roger and Raf. It means that none of the three of us will stop playing now. I won’t stop at number 20. Roger and Rafa are legends of our sport, my two biggest rivals I played against.
They forced me to make the right decisions so that I could prepare well for the matches physically and mentally. I played with them many times, but in 2010 and 2011 it broke. I can now imagine that I could complete the calendar Grand Slam at the US Open. I am in great shape and I am able to show my best tennis in grand slams. My team, my family, my wife and my children have a lot to do with it. I love you and thank you for your patience. ” said the Serb in a ceremonial speech.
Despite the final loss, Matteo Berrettini was satisfied with his performance at Wimbledon. “It simply came to our notice then. Novak was better today than me, he is a great player who writes the history of this sport. He deserves great admiration. I hope it wasn’t my last grand slam final. It was a great honor to be here, it was a great ride. I would like to thank my team, without it I would not be able to do anything. I’ll keep trying and hopefully get a Wimbledon title one day. ”
Men’s Singles Final:
Novak Djokovic (1-Serb) – Matteo Berrettini (7-Tal.) 6: 7 (4), 6: 4, 6: 4, 6: 3
Novak Djokovic started his jubilee 30th grand slam final with a double mistake, but he kept the service. In the third game, he turned from 0:30, in the next game he broke the serve of Matteo Berrettini and after confirming the break he built up a 4: 1 lead. However, the Italian did not lay down his arms. At 2: 5, he turned away the slate and managed the marathon gem on the service, which greatly encouraged him. In the ninth game, Novak Djokovic broke down, then equalized to 5: 5 and forced a secretary, in which he celebrated success. Novak Djokovic equalized from 0: 3 to 3: 3, but the end resulted in Matteo Berrettini, who sealed the gain of the first set with an ace.
Novak Djokovic quickly shook, at the beginning of the second set he took service from the Italian twice and took the lead 4: 0. In these moments, the Serb was able to make full use of the rich experience from challenging matches, he did not make any unforced mistakes. Matteo Berrettini dramatized the second set, reduced to 4: 5, but Novak Djokovic guarded the end.
The Serb was on horseback, in the third act at 1: 1 he beat Talian again and in the next course of the set it was enough for him to keep the service. Matteo Berrettini spoiled too much from the forehand in exchanges, which is his big weapon.
In the fourth set, he did not use a promising lead of 30: 0 at 3: 2 on the return. He was close to working on two breakballs, but Novak Djokovic confirmed that he could catch up with the impossible and made a great pass. Srba was even more aroused by this moment, in the seventh game he grabbed Matte Berrettini’s pass and the match was already successfully completed. In front of Goran Ivaniševič, who won Wimbledon exactly 20 years ago, he turned the third swordball into the ninth game. He adjusted the balance with Matteo Berrettini to 3: 0 and at the same time ended his winning 11-match series on the grass. Novak Djokovic last lost on this surface in June 2018 in the finals of the tournament in London’s Queen’s Club, in which he was not enough for the Croatian Marina Čilič.
