Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Secretary of the Treasury of the United States (USA) Janet Yellen worried about the existence of corona virus variants such as the Delta variant in the midst of a pandemic Covid-19. Because, it is feared that it could have an impact on the recovery of the world economy.
This was conveyed by Yellen after the G20 meeting in Venice, Italy, quoted by AFP, Sunday (11/7/2021).
“We are part of a connected global economy, what happens in other parts of the world affects other countries,” he said.
The finance ministers at the G20 in a statement on Saturday (10/7/2021), warned that the new variant risks lowering the economic recovery. In addition, they also warn of different dangers that can arise from vaccination programs.
“We recognize the importance of working together to accelerate the vaccination process and have a goal of vaccinating 70% of the world’s population next year,” he explained.
Regarding financing the purchase of vaccines for developing countries, Yellen said that much has been done. However, he also added that it was necessary to do something more concrete and effective, for example sending therapy and also protective equipment from Covid-19.
The G20 meeting on Friday (9/7/2021) was scheduled to hear a panel of experts. They warned the world should invest at least $75 billion in the next five years to prepare for and try to prevent the next pandemic from occurring.
“While we are focusing on the medium and long term, we also recognize that we need to do more in the near term,” Yellen said.
He also explained that the World Trade Organization, International Monetary Fund, World Bank and World Health Organization had formed a task force to do this.
“And requested that we have regular reports on how work is going and that we would like to address this issue more in October at the next G20 ministerial meeting next October,” Yellen said. “But of course the variant presents a threat to the whole world.”
