Live ‘Textão’ is SBT’s fight back together with clubs against Globo’s lobby – 07/11/2021

The speech read live by narrator Téo José minutes before the ball rolled in Brazil x Argentina was a strategic counter-coup by SBT’s management against the lobby that Globo has been doing for the amendment that benefits it in the Mandant Law.

The existence of the text was anticipated by column on Thursday (8). Globo tries to enact a mechanism in the law that postpones the effects of the new rules on the broadcasting rights of the soccer Brazilian, causing clubs without a TV contract to be forced to negotiate with the broadcaster.

Behind the scenes, the amendment has been called the “Globo amendment” by lawmakers and leaders. The clubs have been pressing for the mechanism not to be included in the law and this Saturday night they received an important reinforcement from the SBT.

The order to read the “text” live came from the top of the station, which saw in the opportunity of the audience generated by the match – which even beat Globo – a chance to put pressure on parliamentarians. “Alert your deputy”, asked the SBT, comparing the denial to the amendment to “free football”.

The mechanism that Globo fights for the approval of the Mandating Law only asks that the exclusivity of the contracts in force be respected, which would already be fundamental in future negotiations. Of the four amendments already suggested for the bill, two deal with the issue and establish the proposal desired by the broadcaster.

In practice, as an example to explain the amendment, a recent fact: Cuiabá rose from Series B to Series A of the Brazilian Championship and had no contract with any broadcaster. His only alternative was to close with someone who had a contract with the other clubs, that is, Globo, if he wanted to appear on open TV or pay-per-view.

On Friday, Rodrigo Mattos’ column gave more details about the fight. Globo understands that its current contract at the Brazilian Nationals will be jeopardized, as games that are currently only theirs may also belong to Turner.

The clubs, on the other hand, understand that the amendment desired by the broadcaster will bring financial losses. Globo threatens to review the contracts and may impose legal disputes to prevent broadcasts.

With SBT in the fray, the dispute gains new chapters this week. The network has been entering sports rights strongly, broadcasting the Copa America 2021 and having recently acquired the European Champions League broadcast until 2024.

See below the SBT speech against the Globo amendment, read by narrator Téo José:

“Do you know what the Free Football Bill is? It is a bill that will guarantee the right of the football team that plays at home to have the freedom to decide which channel will broadcast the match. The measure will apply to all contracts new and will guarantee greater options for fans and will end games without broadcast. Next Tuesday, the House will vote on this bill, but there is an attempt to include an amendment that totally disfigures this important law that benefits clubs and fans. Alert your deputy! Say no to the attempt to include this amendment and yes to the Free Football Project.”
