West Ham have reportedly made the first move for Sassuolo defender Mert Muldur, but have been unsuccessful.
Muldur is on the radar of several Premier League teams presenting for Turkey at Euro 2020. Those international duties did not go particularly well as his country was eliminated in the group stage. However, Muldur’s performances from last season at the club level have been enough to convince.
The right-back made 28 appearances in his second season in Serie A, up from 24 the previous year. At the age of 22, he has proven his potential and may already be looking for the next step.
It has already been mentioned as a possible target for players like Arsenal and Tottenham.. West Ham has also been in the frame and according to Sassuolo News, it is they who have made the first bid.
The website, part of the Italian media outlet TMW, states West Ham made an offer of about 7 million euros. However, Sassuolo is looking for almost double that number.
Still, they appear to be bracing for Muldur’s possible exit by searching the market for other right-backs. If West Ham can increase their offer, they have a good chance of getting their man.
However, it is not clear if they want to increase their offer much more. They already have Vladimir Coufal – who’s been stalling on a new contract – on the right side, so in theory you don’t need to spend too much on another player there.
However, they will compete on four fronts this season after qualifying for the Europa League in addition to their three national competitions. Therefore, they will need to have more depth in their squad.
Muldur is a versatile player who could help them in different areas, so he can be one that they continue to pursue. However, so far it is not known if they will.
West Ham becomes favorite for forward
A more pressing priority for West Ham this summer is finally finding a new striker.
They sold Sebastien Haller to Ajax in January, but chose to wait before finding the right replacement. In the end, they saw the season end without signing a new center forward and it didn’t hurt them too much as they finished sixth in the Premier League.
But next season, they’ll need more depth up front and could therefore try to sign someone to fill the position this summer.
A report recently revealed that they were leading the race to sign a striker from a London rival …
