Emergency PPKM Officer Attacked by Residents of Kenjeran Surabaya

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Operations officer justifying the Enforcement of Restrictions on Community Activities (PPKM) Emergency, was attacked by dozens of residents of Bulak Banteng Baru, Kenjeran District, Surabaya, while conducting a health protocol patrol.

A volunteer who was at the scene, Rizaldi said, it started when officers consisting of the TNI, Polri, Satpol-PP and volunteers carried out a raid on Saturday (10/7) night. From that activity, it was found that one shop was still open beyond the curfew.

The officers who found the violation then took firm action against the shop by giving sanctions for confiscation of their ID cards and 3-kilogram LPG cylinders.

Knowing this, a number of local residents then started shouting at the officers with harsh words and immediately pelted and attacked the officers’ operational cars.

Duh nyare pesse cek mlarattah mak gik eyojeh deyeh (duh duh, it’s hard to find money like this, how come they are still being evicted like this),” said one resident, as said by Rizaldi, Sunday (11/7).

Other residents were finally provoked, they ganged up on the officers. There was pushing each other.

The officers who were outnumbered immediately decided to withdraw. Rizaldi even got hit in the head until he was kicked.

“I was beaten, mas, kicked because I was behind the officer’s car,” he said.

In the incident, several officers’ cars were damaged.

Tanjung Perak Port Police Chief AKBP Ganis Setyaningrum admitted that he would follow up on the attack on residents.

“Regarding the vandalism incident, it is being followed up,” said Ganis, when confirmed.

He also regretted the attitude of rejection from the community. What they are doing is for the safety and health of the residents themselves.

“Of course we deeply regret this incident, therefore we hope that the community will support the Central Government’s policy regarding Emergency PPKM for the sake of mutual health and safety,” he said.

Kenjeran sub-district head Henni Indriaty said last night’s incident would not make his party afraid or afraid to carry out a similar operation. The three pillar officers in their area will continue to disseminate health protocols to the public.

“We will continue to carry out this socialization activity because we care about public health, I don’t want people in my area to be exposed to Covid 19,” said Henni.
