The cabinet has not taken enough into account the advice on holidays from the behavioral unit of the RIVM. That is the view of Reint Jan Renes, behavioral scientist at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and also a former member of the relevant unit.
“My former colleagues literally wrote out an advice to the cabinet: how should we deal with the holiday? That advice shows that you have to take quite a few steps before you can go on holiday safely, and that you as a government must support this well. ” said Renes in news hour. “And then it is very strange if you are watching the press conference on June 18, that you hear them say: you can just go on holiday, that’s nice. I think the cabinet has not gone along with that enough.”
According to Renes, support is now mainly needed from the population. “You need credibility for that, that you get the picture: these people are vigilant, also on their own functioning. I do miss a kind of self-reflection with regard to the latter. What we know is that people find it difficult if you take something away from them. Renes said. “What you need now is that there is a clear signal: what are we going to do now? That you say, those last two press conferences may not have been so useful, we are going to start again.”
