Nadal ordered free time after the Paris Grand Slam tournament and missed Wimbledon. He had previously announced that he would not even go to the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The tournament in Washington, where he will start for the first time, is scheduled for August 2 to 8.
“I’ve never been here, I wanted to look here and play here. I’m looking forward to returning to the courts, and Washington will be the best start to the summer American string for me,” Nadal said in a statement from the Citi Open organizers. “I’m looking forward to meeting my American fans again, whom I haven’t seen since the 2019 US Open,” he added.
