New York is underwater since this Thursday, July 8. The American city is indeed the victim of violent precipitation which caused significant flooding, in particular in the mouths of the subway, the many videos posted on twitter by the passengers of the subway show. We can see some New Yorkers cross a very dark pool of water to reach the station platforms.
“Lines 1 and A have really taken a hit, with a lot of flooding at the stations,” said Thursday Sarah Feinberg, head of the New York Public Transportation Authority, at a press briefing. Some major roads, especially in the Bronx, have been temporarily closed. New York Police also tweeted images of motorists stranded at the water’s edge.
The National Weather Service (the United States Weather Service) has warned of possible further flooding by this weekend, with the arrival of Storm Elsa, which is rising from Florida.
Concerns for the future
Numerous works by city protection floods had taken place since Hurricane Sandy in 2012 killed 44 people and paralyzed the entire city. It is clear that New York is still very vulnerable to the floods and concerns are growing that such incidents are expected to recur more regularly due to climate change.
Several officials, including Eric Adams, favorite in the November municipal elections in New York (the latter won the Democratic primary) and President of Brooklyn, called for urgent investments to solidify the city’s infrastructure.
