The number of corona infections in our region is increasing again. Especially young people and adults up to the age of 29 are infected with Covid-19. And strikingly, many are getting sicker than expected. For the time being, this will not lead to more admissions to Antwerp hospitals, but in at least 17 municipalities in the province of Antwerp, the figures are moving in the wrong direction remarkably quickly. These include Schelle, Hemiksem, Brasschaat and Zandhoven, Antwerp provincial governor Cathy Berx confirms.

In the province of Antwerp, an Early Warning is currently in effect in 17 municipalities. This means that the number of infections in a row is increasing day after day and the local security cells are extra vigilant. Governor Berx is concerned about an increasing number of clusters that the local authorities have no control over. According to her, this is the case in the municipality of Hove, among others.
In Antwerp, 65% of the infections currently occur with the highly contagious delta variant. The number of infections is rising very sharply, especially among teenagers and adults up to the age of 29. What is also striking is that they are sicker than we had previously estimated.
Although many are getting sicker than expected, this will not lead to more hospital admissions in Antwerp for the time being.
