On July 9, in Sofia, Bulgaria, President Egils Levits received the official TJI flag at the conclusion of the sixth Summit of the Three Seas Initiative (TJI) and the Business Forum organized by the Republic of Bulgaria this year. This symbolically confirms Latvia’s readiness to organize the seventh summit in 2022 in Riga.
At the press conference, the President sincerely thanked the President of Bulgaria for the well-organized summit: “The Sofia Summit was rich in interesting, valuable discussions between the representatives of 12 Member States and our strategic partners – the USA, Germany and the European Commission. Foresight, long-term development, a forward-looking perspective and practical action characterize the discussions at this summit. It will be a great challenge to organize such a big event with us, but we have watched your experience these days, and it will help us to welcome you all next year in Riga. ”
During the press conference, the President of Bulgaria presented the President of Latvia with the official TJI flag and wanted energy and determination, holding the next – seventh – Summit of the Three Seas Initiative and the Business Forum in Riga.
The first half of the day was marked by a presidential discussion on the geopolitical significance and scope of the Three Seas Initiative. During the discussion, the President emphasized European unity and the unity of all Member States, advocating European values, the need to strengthen public participation, and common European development goals. The President also acknowledged that the Three Seas Initiative should be made more visible and the TJI Investment Fund should be strengthened.

The aim of the Three Maritime Initiative Summit and the Business Forum is to promote practical cooperation on priority projects in the fields of transport, energy and digital communications in the IMI countries.
The Three Seas Initiative was established on 25 August 2016 at its first summit in Croatia and consists of 12 European Union Member States: Latvia, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. The United States, Germany and the European Commission participate in the summits as partners. To date, five TJI summits have taken place in Croatia, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Estonia. The sixth is held this year in Bulgaria.
