At the start of the crisis, Van Dis was still in panic mode. “I have a lung ailment, pulmonary fibrosis. And my pulmonologist told me not to count on being out of harm’s way. I had to delve into palliative care. I made a will and an end-of-life will.”

Van Dis was also able to enjoy the peace and quiet in the city afterwards. He looks back on it with a slight nostalgia. “I loved that silence.”

Looking back, Van Dis now knows that he must use all his time, because life can just be over. “That’s what I learned from it. I work harder than ever, with death close at hand.” He says he is “first in line”. “The more you think about death, the better you live.”
