London –
Gary Lineker, former England striker, joins in commenting on the penalty frenzy Raheem Sterling in the semifinals of Euro 2020. According to him, two penalties should have been awarded.
English win Euro 2020 semifinals when fighting Denmark at Wembley Stadium, Thursday (8/7/2021) early morning WIB. The hosts won 2-1, in a game that lasted 120 minutes.
After a 1-1 draw in normal time, where Mikkel Damsgaard’s goal was avenged by Simon Kjaer’s own goal, the match went into extra time. In extra time, England scored the winning goal through a penalty.
The penalty was awarded after Sterling was fouled in the Danish box. While trying to get past Joakim Maehle and Mathias Jensen.
In slow view, the contact that occurs is barely visible. It makes a debate, whether Sterling accidentally fell alias diving or indeed violated.
The referee himself still gave England a penalty. And Harry Kane could use it as the decisive goal for England’s victory over Denmark with a score of 2-1.
Lineker, who led England to the 1990 World Cup semi-finals, said referee Danny Makkelie’s decision was correct. He even joked, Sterling should have been given 2 penalties for being violated by two people at once.
“Don’t know what the fuss is all about. Maybe just 2 penalties,” Lineker wrote on Twitter.
Furthermore, English will advance to the Euro 2020 final. Harry Kane et al will face Italy at Wembley Stadium, Monday (12/7) early morning WIB.
