President of Haiti Jovenel Moise was brutally murdered at his home on Wednesday. Although a number of people were arrested after the incident, the murder of Jovenel Moise still leaves a puzzle.
The news of Moise’s murder was conveyed by the interim Prime Minister (PM), Claude Joseph, as reported by AFP, Wednesday (7/7/2021). Joseph declared himself now in charge of Haiti.
53-year-old Moise was killed in the attack in the early hours of the morning, around 1 a.m. local time. Joseph’s official statement said the attackers spoke Spanish, but gave no further details.
“A group of unidentified individuals, some of whom speak Spanish, attacked the private residence of the President of the Republic and fatally injured the Head of State,” Joseph said in a statement.
The First Lady, Martine Moise, was also shot in the attack but survived despite her injuries. Joseph said in his statement that a group of armed individuals attacked Moise’s residence in the early hours of the morning of foreigners.
“The president was murdered at his home by foreigners who spoke English and Spanish,” said Joseph.
Haitian Ambassador to the United States (US) Bocchlt Edmond called the perpetrators who killed Haitian President Jovenel Moise a ‘professional’ mercenary. The perpetrators disguised themselves as agents of the US Drug Enforcement Administration or DEA.
“It was a well-orchestrated attack and it was the professionals,” Edmond told reporters AFP, Thursday (8/7/2021).
“We have the video and we believe it is a mercenary,” he added.
