Research in Germany: vaccines very effective, 3800 people still sick

The RKI emphasizes that vaccines work very well. The effectiveness is higher than 90 percent, reports the institute.

In the 3,806 cases of ‘vaccine breakthroughs’, people still developed Covid-19 complaints at least two weeks after they had been fully vaccinated. This is a fraction of the approximately 975,000 cases of illness reported in the same period as a result of a corona infection. Most of this large group had not been vaccinated.

Vaccination rate is decreasing

In Germany, with a population of approximately 83 million, about 25 million people had been fully vaccinated on 4 July. However, the rate at which people are vaccinated continues to decline.

Last week, there was an average of 710,000 injections per day. The week before, that average was more than 800,000, which was again a decrease compared to the previous period.

Delta Variant Concern

Meanwhile, concerns are growing about the spread of the highly contagious delta strain. In the week ending June 27, this accounted for 59 percent of the confirmed infections, almost doubling compared to a week earlier.

The RKI suspects that two-thirds of new corona cases now involve infection with that mutant, which was first found in India.
