Annex Gojek in Thailand, Airasia Boss: I want to imitate them

Jakarta

Airasia Group’s new digital business line, Airasia Digital, has officially taken over Gojek’s operations in Thailand. This strategic partnership between Airasia Digital and Gojek is considered mutually beneficial. It is hoped that this will strengthen Gojek’s investment and focus on developing in Vietnam and Singapore.

Meanwhile, Gojek will get a share ownership in the Airasia super app, which currently has a valuation of US$ 1 billion.

Airasia Group CEO Tony Fernandes said that Airasia had learned a number of things from Gojek. According to him, the on-demand service and payment platform in Southeast Asia has proven its success in building business models in Indonesia and Singapore.

“For me, Gojek has proven its business can run and I want to emulate them. Gojek has always been at the forefront (in this business),” Tony said in a written statement, Wednesday (7/7/2021).

Furthermore, Tony expressed his admiration for Gojek. For him, Gojek is one of the companies that has succeeded in making super apps and being imitated by other companies.

“The pioneers of low-cost airlines were Southwest and I imitated their model and RyanAir and EasyJet. For me, in ASEAN Gojek was the first company to actually make a super app and other companies have imitated them. That’s why “I need to learn a lot from them. Of course, this acquisition is not only about Thailand, but also about how I learned from Gojek in building its business operations in Thailand, which was taken from their success in Indonesia and Singapore,” he said.

“So, Gojek’s value for Airasia digital is firstly business acquisition. Second is the relationship with Gojek employees. And third is collaboration that we can do together and complement each other,” he continued.

To note, at the same time Gojek will also increase investment in Vietnam and Singapore as centers of their international business growth. Specifically in Singapore, Gojek will increase the number of driver-partners and merchants, improve user experience, and launch new products and services, such as the launch of the latest GoTaxi product.

Meanwhile in Vietnam, Gojek will soon launch the GoCar service. This service will later complement the two-wheeled services, logistics, and food delivery services that are already available.
