The Caribbean Haitian authorities say the president has killed Haitian President Georges Moiz in an armed attack. The attackers invaded his house at night and shot the president, who died from his injuries. The attack also injured the president’s wife, Martin, who is receiving medical treatment.
It is not yet clear who the attackers were. Haitian officials report that some of the attackers spoke English and Spanish (Haiti’s main languages are Haitian and French). Locals say the attackers have pretended to be employees of the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
Moses, 53, has been president of Haiti since 2017. On Monday, he nominated a new prime minister and promised to hold parliamentary and presidential elections in September. Seven prime ministers have already changed during Moses’ reign.
The assassination of the president is expected to deepen the political crisis in Haiti. The country has been hit hard by natural disasters and disease epidemics, as well as by armed conflict and crime. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere; it is estimated that almost 60% of the population lives in poverty.
The President of Haiti is already the second head of state to be killed in an armed conflict this year. In April, clashes with insurgents the death of Chadian President Idriss Deby, who was in power in this African country for more than 30 years.
