President Haiti, Jovenel Moise, was killed in an attack on his private residence on Wednesday (7/7) early morning. His wife or the first lady of Haiti, Martine Moise, was also reportedly shot, but survived.
As reported AFP, Wednesday (7/7/2021), the interim Prime Minister (PM) of Haiti, Claude Joseph, who is now taking over as interim leadership, said that Martine was shot and injured when a group of people stormed the Haitian presidential residence in the early hours of the morning, around 01.00 local time.
Joseph stated that Martine is currently undergoing medical treatment at a local hospital. The exact condition of the first lady of Haiti was not further explained.
It was not explained in detail about the attack that led to Moise’s death. In his statement, Joseph only mentioned 53 years old Moise killed killed in an attack orchestrated by a group of people.
It is not known for sure the party or group behind the assassination of the President of Haiti.
Furthermore, Joseph appealed to the Haitian public to remain calm. He also stressed that the Haitian police and military will ensure the safety of citizens.
“All steps have been taken to ensure the survival of the country and to protect the nation. This democracy and republic will win,” he stressed as reported by The Daily Beast.
Joseph in his statement condemned the attack, which he called “a disgusting, inhuman and barbaric act”.
