Pentagon cancels mega-contract awarded to Microsoft against Amazon

The US Department of Defense cancels a $ 10 billion IT contract it awarded to Microsoft in 2019. It is a question of managing the cloud, the data storage of the American army, but also of modernizing its entire computer system. The contract was at the center of a dispute between Microsoft and Amazon.

With our correspondent in Washington, Anne Corpet

« With the evolution of the technological environment, it has become clear that this contract no longer meets our requirements. », Explains the Pentagon. But by terminating this contract, the Ministry of Defense is also putting an end to a legal battle that threatened to last for many years.

When the ten-year contract was awarded to Microsoft, Amazon had indeed filed a complaint. The company dismissed by the Pentagon believed it had been the victim of Donald Trump’s retribution. The latter’s hostility towards Jeff Bezos, also owner of the Washington Post, was obvious: he could not stand the newspaper’s critical coverage of his presidency.

The US military, which denied any interference from the White House, announced that it finally planned to hire several specialized companies and no longer just one. Microsoft and Amazon will be solicited. Microsoft said it understood the Pentagon’s reasons and added in a statement: ” The security of the United States is more important than any contract. »
