Charlotte Gainsbourg: The beautiful Nymphomaniac abandoned by Lars von Trier

For the New York premiere of Nymphomaniac – volume 1 on March 13, director Lars von Trier and one of his currently most controversial actors, Shia LaBeouf, were absent. All the spotlight was therefore focused on Charlotte Gainsbourg, fetish actress of Danish filmmaker Christian Slater – who came with his wife Brittany Lopez -, Stacy Martin, Uma Thurman and Stellan Skarsgard. A nice bunch of actors to defend the daring work of the director of Dancer in the Dark, which attempts to retrace the erotic life of a woman in two films. Gillian Anderson, Emmy Rossum and Gina Gershon were among the guests at this screening.

Charlotte and Lars

During her masterclass organized in Paris by the Forum des images on February 12, Charlotte Gainsbourg, heroine d’Antichrist, Melancholia and now Nymphomaniac 1 and 2 (released in France in January), had mentioned his relationship with director Lars Von Trier. The latter said: “If we get along so well with Charlotte, maybe it’s because I look like Serge Gainsbourg.“To this, the actress replies:”I think he’s not wrong, we have a fatherly relationship. I liked to put it on a pedestal. “The confusing method of” LVT “allows the actress to have a lot of freedom:”It’s hard to come to terms with that of other directors afterwards.“For difficult scenes, he accompanies his actors a lot:”There is a certain sadomasochistic pleasure“says Charlotte Gainsbourg, acknowledging that he took pleasure in torturing her a bit. In addition, she will return to the delicate shoot of Melancholia, during which, finding herself with many other actors, she was not happy. She admits to having been overwhelmed by the filmmaker who told her that she was secondary.

Those close to Charlotte Gainsbourg, her companion Yvan Attal, her mother Jane Birkin for example, understand why she shoots with a director who gives her scenes that are sometimes so hard, psychologically and physically. During the Cannes Film Festival 2011, Lars von Trier had already mentioned his project Nymphomaniac : “AAt first, I thought he was joking with his porn movie. “The shooting was obviously not easy:”I am very jealous by nature, I was wondering when I would intervene …“When by the way sadomasochistic:”It was difficult because I was humiliated on the set.“She has great confidence in Lars von Trier, but can’t know what he’s going to do. What about another movie with him? “I think it’s over, he saw everything he wanted to see.”

Interdiction

Note that the Turks will not be able to see the sulphurous Nymphomaniac. Considering it “pornographic”, the authorities have in fact decided to ban it. “I strongly condemn the ban on Nymphomaniac, while in Turkey there is an age limit imposed in cinemas“, indignant on Twitter the Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan, prize of the direction 2008 (The Three Monkeys) and Grand Prix 2011 (Once upon a time in Anatolia) at the Cannes Film Festival. Elsewhere abroad, Romania had decided to ban the broadcast of the second part, which includes explicit sex scenes, before canceling this measure. In France, part 1 was banned for under 16s and part 2 for under 18s by court decision, AFP recalls.
