Prohibits «Champagne»: – Scandalous

It is widely recognized among wine enthusiasts that the exclusive drink Champagne can only be made from the French area of the same name.

At the French Champagne Committee websites it is clear:

– Champagne only comes from Champagne.

New Russian law

However, Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree. On Friday, he signed a law that requires all foreign producers of sparkling wine to describe the product as just that: “Sparkling wine” – on the back of the bottle.

It reports several media, among others Reuters.

According to Russian law, only Russian producers of Champagne, or “Shampanskoye” as the drink is called over there, can now continue to use the prestigious term alone.

The French upset

The bill has caused the French to tear their hair out, but their prayers are not heard.

– To deprive the Champagne people of the right to use their own name is scandalous. It is our common heritage and children of the heart, say Maxime Toubart and Jean-Marie Barillere, the leaders of the champagne committee in a statement, according to Guardian.

The French champagne industry is slaughtering the new law, and recommends stopping exports to the country, according to Reuters.

They point out that 120 countries have legislated that the “Champagne” name is a protected title reserved for sparkling wine from the French region.

– The Champagne Committee regrets the fact that this legislation does not ensure that Russian consumers have clear and transparent information about the wine’s origin and properties, Toubart and Barillere add.

Since Soviet times, “shampanskoye” in Russia has been used as a generic term for a wide variety of sparkling wines. It originates from the Stalin era, when an elite drink was made available to everyone.

Giant says ok

The French Minister of Trade, Franck Riester, says he will take a closer look at Russian law, and was in contact with the wine industry and France’s European partners.

– We will always support our producers and French greatness, he writes on Twitter.

Champagne giant Möet Hennessy first went against the law on Saturday, threatening to stop all exports of the drink.

The company is behind well-known brands such as Moet & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot and Dom Perignon.

On Monday, however, they have reversed. According to Reuters, the company states that they comply with the new law. From now on, they will start labeling their products as sparkling wine, in order to continue exporting the drink to France.

Billion-dollar industry

France has 360 champagne houses, and produces around 231 million bottles a year. It has a turnover of about 42.7 billion kroner annually, of which the export amount is approximately 26 billion, of which the United Kingdom and the United States are the largest customers, according to Guardian.

Russia imports 50 million liters of sparkling wine every year, and 13 percent of this will be Champagne, according to the same newspaper.
