Donner broke through as a director in 1976 with the horror film classic Omen and in 1978 followed up with the first modern superhero film, Superman, with Christopher Reeves in the lead role.
During his career, he became known as a solid director of major films, among them the entire series of four of Deadly Weapons, the adventure film Goonies and the black comedy Scrooged starring Bill Murray.
Donner was also successful as a producer, including Redd Willy and two of the X-Men films of the early 2000s.
