Last Saturday, the memes about the arrival of “Julio Iglesias” with the Moderna vaccines social networks flooded and the inevitable questions were: why is that plane called like that? And was it planned that just this ship would bring the vaccines at the beginning of July?
Olavi Linkola, Gerente de Air Europa, He told why the ship was named in honor of the famous Spanish singer. He stressed that the president of the airline, Juan José Hidalgo, has a “long and very good friendship” with the artist.
“They met on a tour that Julio Iglesias did in Spain, more than 30 years ago, sponsored by Viajes Halcón, which is the origin of Air Europa, so the president accompanied that tour and that’s where the great friendship was born,” he began.
From there, the meetings became very frequent and it was precisely in a meeting that the president of the firm promised to name a plane in his honor. “In one of those lunches the affection came out, the ‘I love you very much, friend, and one day I’m going to put your name on one of my planes.’ And the promise was that the first “Dreamliner” to arrive in the fleet was going to be called Julio Iglesias, “he explained.
And so it was that, when the firm began to incorporate the Dreamliner aircraft, Hidalgo fulfilled his promise and baptized the first unit as “Julio Iglesias.”

Regarding the reason for the choice of this plane for the transfer of 150,000 doses of Moderna vaccines this Saturday, in one of the first days of July, he said that “it was pure coincidence.” “But a great coincidence, I was very pleased to wake up and see the specialized media talk about ‘Julio Iglesias’ and it took me a few minutes to realize what plane we had brought for this,” he confessed.
He even revealed that it is customary for the firm to name the planes with the identity of famous or relevant personalities. For example, one was called Los del Río (known by the song “Macarena”), also David Bisbal and Melendi, for example.
The Air manager took the opportunity to highlight that, beyond the “pun” and the humorous story, it is an honor for the firm to bring vaccines that mean hope for the Paraguayan population.
In this context, he said that this is the second flight in charge of bringing immunological containers against the new coronavirus to Paraguay. “We are prepared to be able to bring any type of vaccines,” he commented.
