How did the hackers operate?
The hackers broke into Kaseya, an American software company that specializes in cybersecurity. Once inside, the hackers sent a fake security update to Kaseya’s customers on Friday night. Once that fake update was installed, the companies received a message that their computer system had been impacted and that they would have to pay millions to get their files back.
Hundreds of companies around the world were paralyzed in this way, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, Colombia, South Africa, Sweden and the Netherlands. Hundreds of Coop supermarket stores had to close on Saturday because the cash registers were offline – a result of the attack. The White House had said this weekend it would contact the victims “to provide assistance”.
