CEO Qualcomm Cristiano Amon has big plans to deal with Apple M1. He boasts that he can beat the chip champion’s performance Apple for that laptop.
Reported by Reuters, Sunday (4/7/2021) Amon believes Qualcomm can make the best processor in the world, namely by designing a chip that is better than the Apple M1. Amon’s secret weapon to defeat Apple is Nuvia, which they acquired for USD 1.4 billion.
To be precise, it is the person behind Nuvia, which was founded by three former Apple engineers whose specialty is chip design and was involved in the design process of Apple’s A series system on a chip (SoC).
The three founders of Nuvia are now joining Qualcomm, and are focused on developing chips for consumer-grade computers. Although Qualcomm did not rule out the possibility of obtaining a chip license for the data center.
The presence of these three people makes Qualcomm believe that it can release ARM chips for laptops starting in 2022, namely chips that use designs from Nuvia.
Not only that, Amon also believes that Qualcomm’s experience in making 5G modems and processors for mobile phones will provide a better user experience for laptops, one of which is by providing 5G connectivity on chips for laptops.
5G connection, or other cellular connections, is not done by Apple in the Mac line with the M1 chip. But don’t forget, they have an iPad Pro with an M1 chip that has a 5G connection.
It seems that Qualcomm wants to increase its dominance in the realm of chips from just chips for mobile phones to chips for laptops. But this step certainly requires a lot of additional effort from Qualcomm.
Microsoft does use Qualcomm-made chips in the Surface Pro X, which was showcased at the Windows 11 launch event. But so far there are very few laptops with Qualcomm chips and still dominated by Intel and AMD.
Intel will not remain silent on this Qualcomm move. They are preparing a hybrid CPU like an ARM chip. That is a processor that uses a combination of fast cores with power-saving cores to increase the performance and efficiency of the processor.
