Former South African President Jacob Zuma has yet to serve his prison sentence. The Constitutional Court, which earlier this week sentenced him to 15 months in prison for contempt of the rule of law, gives him room to present his objections to the court. The prison sentence has therefore been suspended.
The Constitutional Court ruled harshly on Zuma on Tuesday. He has ignored, undermined and even tried to destroy the rule of law, the judgment read. The former president was given five days to report to a police station.
Zuma (79) and his lawyers protested, pointing out, among other things, that the health of the former president could be at risk if he becomes infected with corona in prison. The “excessive” statement is also politically motivated, he says. He claims to be the victim of a witch hunt.
Earlier this year, Zuma failed to appear before a committee investigating corruption practices during Zuma’s tenure. That investigation does not only focus on the former president. In addition, there is an individual trial for corruption against Zuma.
