The Milner Therapeutics Institute and the University of Cambridge’s Gurdon Institute have identified 200 approved drugs that are predicted to work against COVID-19.
These 200 drugs came from the examination of nearly 2,000 drugs.
They used a combination of computational biology and machine learning to create a comprehensive map of the proteins involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection — from proteins that help the virus enter host cells to proteins produced as a result of infection.
By examining these networks using an artificial intelligence (AI) approach, researchers can identify key proteins involved in infection, as well as biological pathways that drugs might target.
To date, most small molecule and antibody approaches to treating Covid-19 are drugs that are currently the subject of clinical trials or have gone through clinical trials and have been approved.
