Fantastic performance for Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego, that both fly to round of 16 of the Wimbledon Tournament. The Roman knocks out the Slovenian Aljaž to size with the final score of 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, with the number 9 in the world breaking a set break. The path taken by the Turinese is almost identical, eliminating the Australian James Duckworth 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. After 66 years, two Italians enter the top 16 of the English Slam.

Italian history is rewritten in the Wimbledon Tournament. For the first time in 66 years, two Italian players fly to the round of 16 of the English Slam. A double that hasn’t been seen since the days of Giuseppe Merlo and Nicola Pietrangeli back in 1955. Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego get rid of. in fact, respectively by the Slovenian Aljaž Bedene and the Australian James Duckworth; both in three sets.
The growth for the Roman tennis player, two years later, is evident. Unlike what happened in 2019, in the first round, Berrettini plays a real Top10 match against Bedene. The first real push comes back to the field after the interruption due to rain at 3-3, 40-40 and Bedene service. The number 9 in the world manages to snatch his opponent’s serve in the ninth game, building a solid foundation for the management of the match from that moment on. Under a set, Bedene continues to play his game, however, finding in Berrettini a very uncomfortable customer on these fields. The Slovenian almost never creates problems in response and, having found the break even in the middle of the second set, Matteo leads the partial in port up to the second 6-4. A discouragement that hits Bedene even at the beginning of the third set, when the Slovenian immediately loses his service in the first serving. From there Berrettini leaves him the crumbs, granting a total of 4 points overall in the set to his service that are worth the triple 6-4 final. Thus equaled his best result at Wimbledon and now, for the number 9 in the world, there will be the Belarusian Ilya Ivashka waiting for him in the fourth round of the London Tournament.
Very similar trend in the score and in the decisive tears also for Lorenzo Sonego, who gets rid of Duckworth 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Fairly balanced start to the game. The first to find the sharp is Sonego who takes advantage of a missed pass by Duckworth, who makes three mistakes in one game and allows the break in the sixth game (4-2). The Piedmontese returns to the field after the break due to the extremely concentrated rain and practically never leaves the opponent the chance to get back into the race. The blue in the last two rounds of service does not grant even a point to the Australian and wins the first set. The first five games of the second set are very fast and strictly follow the order of the service shifts (2-3). Sonego is the first to have to face a potentially dangerous situation, but in the sixth game he keeps to the advantages (3-3). The blue still takes advantage of Duckworth’s disastrous service and places the break (5-4). In the final, the Piedmontese’s arm does not tremble and scores 2-0. The Australian manages to save a break point in both the first and third games (1-2). The Turin player, however, in the seventh game wins another chance to break his opponent’s serve and this time he manages to achieve it (4-3). Duckworth suffers a heavy psychological backlash given the scoring situation and raises the white flag. For him, Federer could be in sight.
