The photos, released by the military itself, were taken during an exercise for a military parade next month. This marks the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. Before that, the country was part of the Soviet Union.
‘Slightly more difficult’
The women in the photos are wearing military clothing, with black, mid-high heels underneath. “For the first time, today’s training took place in heels,” one of the cadets told a website of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. “It’s a little harder than on army boots, but we’re doing our best.”

It is causing a lot of commotion in Ukraine. Several politicians took a pair of heels to work for the defense secretary to wear to the parade.
‘Idiot and evil’
“It’s hard to think of an even more idiotic, more evil idea than this,” one of them told AFP news agency, also pointing out the risks to women’s health. “These women – just like men – risk their lives, and don’t deserve to be mocked.”
Another politician believes that the authorities should publicly apologize for this ‘humiliation’ of women and investigate the decision-making process. Still others speak of sexism, misogyny, disgrace and ‘medieval thoughts’ of the army top and the secretary of defense.
