A submarine fire broke out in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on Friday morning, Reuters reported.
Oil company Pemex, which has gas pipelines in these waters, has announced that there has been an underwater outbreak.
Countless videos with excerpts have been published on the Internet. Meteorologist Jānis Trallis has also shared a video on the microblogging site “Twitter”, which shows an unusual phenomenon – an underwater fire.
The bright orange flames rising from the water in the video resemble lava. In social media, this view has been cast as the “eye of fire” due to the circular shape of the flame.
The fire occurred near the Pemex oil rig. According to the company, it took more than five hours to put out the fire. Pemex reports that the gas leak took place around 5:15 local time, but the fire was extinguished around 10:30.
The fire started in an underwater pipeline connecting to an oil rig.
This platform is located near the southern edge of the Gulf of Mexico.
The company said there were no casualties in the fire.
The company is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
Angel Karizales, a spokesman for the Mexican oil safety regulation ASEA, told Twitter that the incident did not cause a leak. He did not comment on what was burning directly above the surface of the water.
The company’s employees used nitrogen to extinguish the fire.
